USPS went where no post has gone before when NASA affixed the 1991 Pluto stamp to its New Horizons spacecraft, which made the world’s first flyby of the dwarf planet July 14.
In August, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll returned to the spotlight when the Postal Service added Elvis Presley to its Music Icons stamp series.
Also in August, USPS approved new design standards for curbside mailboxes that accommodate larger packages.
Summer ended on a solemn note: Postal Service employees marked the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The Postal Service also kept the mail moving throughout several challenging periods in September, including wildfires in California, Washington and other western states and Pope Francis’s historic visit to the United States.
September also included National PCC week — which highlighted technology, training and customer service — as well as dedication ceremonies for the Ingrid Bergman and Paul Newman stamps.
The quarter concluded with a milestone: The Postal Service completed deployment of its Mobile Delivery Devices, which are credited with improving the way USPS does business.
