Be alert as schools reopen

Never pass a school bus with its red lights flashing or its stop sign extended.

The Postal Service is reminding employees who operate motor vehicles to be extra vigilant near schools and playgrounds as classes resume for the school year.

While driving, remember to:

• Slow down and obey speed limits.

• Never pass a school bus with flashing red lights or its stop sign extended. Vehicles on both sides of the street must remain at least 10 feet away from the bus until all children have safely entered or exited the vehicle.

• Stay alert. Children are unpredictable: They ignore hazards, take risks and fail to look both ways when crossing the street, whether walking or riding a bike.

• When approaching a school zone, watch for flashing yellow lights indicating that you must reduce your speed to the posted limit. Don’t attempt to pass or change lanes.

• Adjust mirrors so you can see around your vehicle.

• Avoid backing up.

• Avoid distracted driving.
