A sweet deal

Postmaster helps marshmallow factory with shipping

Delafield, WI, Postmaster Joe Rohan recently used Business Connect to help generate $1.4 million in new revenue for USPS.

A Wisconsin Postmaster’s visit to a new business in his community has resulted in $1.4 million in new revenue for the Postal Service.

After a company that specializes in making stuffed marshmallows opened a factory in Delafield, WI, Joe Rohan stopped by to talk about USPS products and services.

“I was at the right place, at the right time,” he said. “I’m always on the lookout for new business. I stop in and drop a card.”

As the company’s online sales increased, the Delafield Post Office began to receive more package pickup requests.

Rohan then submitted a tip through Business Connect, the Postal Service’s sales lead program for Postmasters, managers and supervisors.

Gina Weber, a Lakeland District field sales representative, followed up with the customer about shipping options and closed a deal valued at $1.4 million.

The Postal Service has designated August as Business Connect Month to celebrate the program, which has brought in almost $4 billion in new estimated annualized revenue since its inception in 2005.

Revenue generated from Business Connect leads is counted toward the Postal Service’s Race for a $Billion campaign goal.

The initiative — which aims to raise $1 billion through employee-provided sales leads before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30 — passed its goal earlier this month and stands at $1.03 billion, according to an Aug. 20 ranking of all district contributions.

“Joe Rohan and the Delafield Post Office team have developed a reputation among their local businesses that USPS is a reliable business partner,” said Mary Anderson, small-business engagement director at USPS headquarters in Washington, DC. “This ‘sweet deal’ is only the latest of many sales that have resulted from their leads.”
