PMG delivers update to the USPS Board of Governors

He addressed a variety of topics, including package volume growth and network modernization

The Postal Service’s package volume grew almost 7 percent during the recent holiday season, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy recently told the USPS Board of Governors.

The growth resulted from the organization’s improving service reliability and new product offerings, such as USPS Ground Advantage, DeJoy said. While delivering more packages, the Postal Service also cut costs, including the reduction of 8 million workhours and $489 million in transportation costs when compared with the previous year.

“This is a first and I will continue to push the boundaries on this activity, as it is the only way to raise the level of operating performance and achieve the financial objectives required by law,” DeJoy said.

He delivered his remarks during the board’s Feb. 8 meeting in Washington, DC.

The postmaster general also updated the board members on the modernization of the USPS network; improvements in transportation, sales and workforce development; the Postal Service’s new sustainability targets; the Project Safe Delivery crime prevention program; and the organization’s continued commitment to the timely delivery of Election Mail.

The Postal Service encourages employees to read DeJoy’s complete message, which is posted on the USPS Newsroom website.

Hot pursuit

This rural carrier saved a driver and her passenger from a vehicle fire

Rural Carrier Keri VanEtta was driving along her Newman, IL, route in December when another vehicle passed her, leaving a trail of black smoke.

The driver appeared to be unaware of the problem, so VanEtta safely caught up with the vehicle and motioned for her to pull over.

VanEtta also stopped, called 911 and helped the driver and her passenger exit the vehicle.

After VanEtta and the two women moved a safe distance, they watched as the car became engulfed in flames.

“I think you just saved my life,” the driver told VanEtta.

Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.

Employees featured in “Heroes” receive letters of commendation through the Postmaster General Heroes’ Program. The nomination form is available on Blue.
