The Postal Service will release a new set of stamps next month celebrating the life and work of photographer, musician and activist Linda McCartney, as Link reported last week.
There was plenty of other philatelic news, too: A ceremony for the 35th stamp in the Literary Arts series, Sarah Orne Jewett, in South Berwick, ME; a special event in Soldotna, AK, featuring last year’s Freshwater Fishing Lures stamps; a look at the phenomenon of Postcrossing maxicards; and a “Primers” column on semipostal stamps.
We told you about a temporary price change planned for certain package categories during peak season and shared a dramatic story of how a seat belt saved the life of a postmaster during a snowstorm.
The “History” column took a look at the story behind the design of a Palo Alto Post Office; and a traveling exhibition on the RMS Titanic now in Charlotte, NC, has added a display on Oscar Scott Woody, one of five postal clerks who perished in the disaster.
Finally, in “Heroes,” Carrier Technician James Jarm was delivering mail in Albuquerque, NM, when he noticed fire a block away. He went to the scene and found a house and car engulfed in flames.
The postal employee called 911 and, with a neighbor, pulled the passed-out homeowner away from the area and stayed with him until help arrived.
Both the customer and Jarm — who suffered heat burns and eye irritation — have since recovered.
