Employee turns grief into positive action

Mitchell Rivas is the co-founder of Maryssa’s Mission Foundation.

Cleveland Letter Carrier Mitchell Rivas shared his nonprofit work with readers in a recent issue of The Eagle magazine.

Rivas and his wife, Mindy, founded Maryssa’s Mission Foundation to support the families of hospitalized children.

Having lost their 2-year-old daughter Maryssa, who was born with a heart defect, the couple understands the difficulties faced by the parents of a medically fragile child.

Through the foundation, families are given food, support and help with lodging.

“We hope to take the pressure off these families and let them focus on what’s most important,” Mitchell Rivas said.

“Keeping my daughter’s memory alive while being able to serve others is really rewarding,” he said. “It’s now in the DNA of our family to serve others.”

The Eagle is seeking to feature more employees like Rivas in future editions of “Spotlight.”
