The Postal Service wants to remind employees about the Commuter Benefits Program, which allows them to pay for qualified commuting costs using pretax money.
Qualified expenses include transit costs and parking fees. The Internal Revenue Service has increased the limit for each category in 2022 to $280 a month, up from $270 a month last year.
Any career Postal Service employee is eligible for this benefit. There is no fee to join or cancel. There is no open enrollment period; employees can enroll or make changes at any time throughout the year.
Employees who have temporarily suspended their commuter benefits and would like to resume them are reminded to make their elections by 11:59 p.m. ET on the 27th of the month two months prior to the month the benefit starts.
For example, to make an election for March, any changes must be made by 11:59 p.m. ET on Jan. 27.
A recent change: Employees who choose the prepaid card option for commuter benefits can now use funds earmarked for transit and parking interchangeably. This also applies to any accrued balances. Only the prepaid card option offers this flexibility.
