Wildfires often begin unnoticed and are usually triggered by lightning or accidents. They spread quickly, igniting brush, trees and homes.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, approximately 60,000-80,000 wildfires occur annually in the United States. These fires are one of nature’s most destructive forces, capable of moving as fast as 14 miles per hour.
The Postal Service encourages employees to follow these steps to protect themselves:
- Prepare a disaster supply kit before the threat of a wildfire.
- Create a communications plan with your family.
- Learn evacuation routes and plan to evacuate if advised by local authorities.
- Monitor news outlets for current information.
