The Postal Service is striving to reduce its impact on the environment, Chief Sustainability Officer Tom Day told attendees at an Earth Day celebration in Dallas last week.
“This is an essential part of our brand and aligns with our longstanding history of being a socially responsible member of the communities we serve,” Day said.
USPS reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 12.4 percent between 2008 and 2015 while slashing facility energy usage by 29.5 percent since 2003.
“These are goals we’re proud of and fully embrace,” Day said at the event, which was hosted by the nonprofit organization Earth Day Texas.
He also discussed plans to devise a climate strategy and explained how the Postal Service’s 1,300 employee-led lean green teams are helping to build a “conservation culture” by promoting recycling and other environmentally friendly practices.
