My name is Ann Marie Byrnes and I’m an environmental programs analyst with the Postal Service’s Environmental Affairs and Corporate Sustainability group.
I’ve been with USPS for 18 years and have worked in environmental compliance for my entire career.
The Postal Service has one of largest environmental footprints in the public and private sectors, and we must comply with all federal, state and local environmental regulations.
I am part of a small group of environmental professionals that provides critical support to the field on issues related to environmental compliance. We also act as liaisons with federal, state and local regulators.
Our team mission is to mitigate the organization’s environmental risk, reduce costs, protect the brand and ensure continuity of operations.
We do this by standardizing compliance strategies and procedures throughout the organization. We also develop, assign and track mandatory compliance training for employees.
I work in Garden City, NY, and support facilities in New York and New Jersey. I assist sites on a number of environmental issues, including managing hazardous and nonhazardous waste, securing air emissions permits, advising on protecting stormwater runoff from pollutants and — always — recordkeeping.
I also often obtain and update required USPS environmental operating permits, registrations and implementation plans, and conduct compliance assurance visits to my assigned sites to identify and correct regulatory deficiencies.
I help our employees, operations and customers protect the environment.
