Letter Carrier Michael Waite was delivering mail at a Wallingford, CT, condominium complex in December when he saw a customer run out of a unit filled with smoke.
Waite called 911, checked on the man and began knocking loudly on the doors to the other units while yelling: “Get out! There’s a fire!”
Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze, which displaced residents of 12 units.
The Postal Service employee is credited with alerting everyone to the emergency, including a mother and three children who were asleep at the time.
The local fire department later honored him.
