Hallmark marked African American History Month this year by giving away 1 million Mahogany greeting cards — with a little help from the Postal Service.
Mahogany, introduced in 1987, provides the most extensive line of greeting cards available for African American consumers.
On Feb. 1, Hallmark began offering free card packs to those who requested one at Hallmark.com/ShareMahoganyCards. The site featured a link to usps.com, where consumers can purchase stamps, including this year’s Black Heritage release honoring playwright August Wilson.
By the end of the first week, Hallmark had completed the giveaway.
“The Postal Service is proud to observe African American History Month each year. This year, we took special pride in our work with Hallmark to help more consumers learn about the Mahogany brand and the enduring power of greeting cards,” said Chris Karpenko, the Postal Service’s brand marketing executive director.
The card packs that consumers received included two Mahogany cards and one card from the brand’s new Uplifted & Empowered collection, which showcase African American writers and celebrate the beauty, significance and power of Black lives.
In addition to the card giveaway, Mahogany experienced a surge in popularity on its social media channels, including Instagram, where the brand’s follower count increased 95 percent during the first week of February.
