June sales challenge brings in $133M

Fayetteville, AR, Letter Carrier Linuel Bumgarner has submitted sales that will generate more than $824,000 in estimated annualized revenue for USPS.

The Postal Service’s June #LEADtheWay campaign resulted in more than 17,000 sales leads from employees last month.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted USPS to take a different approach to the annual sales campaign, which encourages employees to submit leads through several programs.

“We changed the name of the campaign to #LEADtheWayBack to emphasize how USPS can help businesses recover from the pandemic and thrive,” said Lou DeReinzo, small-business senior sales specialist at USPS headquarters in Washington, DC. “Our goal this year wasn’t to meet or beat a certain number, but to do our part to boost Main Street USA.”

Employees submitted 17,323 sales leads in June, bringing in $133 million in new revenue.

One of those leads was from Fayetteville, AR, Letter Carrier Linuel Bumgarner.

A T-shirt business had started up on his route, and Bumgarner supplied the company with postage information and arranged for daily package pickup.

He also submitted a lead through the Customer Connect program for letter carriers. The Arkansas District sales team followed up with the customer and closed a shipping deal that will bring in $673,500 in revenue for the Postal Service.

Bumgarner also submitted two leads earlier this year through Customer Connect that, combined, will bring in an additional $150,779 in revenue.

All three deals have been added to the Postal Service’s Race for a $Billion campaign total.

The initiative — which is at $893.2 million, according to a July 9 ranking of all district contributions — aims to raise $1 billion through employee-provided sales leads before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30.

“Postal Service employees went above and beyond in June to help business come back from the pandemic,” said Mary Anderson, small-business engagement director at USPS headquarters. “Letter carriers like Linuel Bumgarner are helping us all do our part.”
