Post Office Murals debut April 10

Stamps featuring murals in Post Offices
The Post Office Murals stamps feature, clockwise from top left, “Sugarloaf Mountain,” “Mountains and Yucca,” “Antelope,” “Air Mail” and “Kiowas Moving Camp.”

Not every Post Office has a mural, but every Post Office will soon have Post Office Murals stamps.

The 10-stamp pane showcasing five classic works of art will be released Wednesday, April 10.

Each stamp features a detail from one of five murals that were designed to help boost the public’s morale during the Great Depression:

• “Kiowas Moving Camp (1936). This multi-part mural, which is displayed at the Anadarko, OK, Post Office, depicts Plains Indian life.

• “Mountains and Yucca (1937). This mural depicts Cookes Range, located just north of the Deming, NM, Post Office, where the painting is displayed.

• “Antelope(1939). A herd of pronghorn, which are sometimes referred to as American antelope, is depicted in this mural that hangs in the lobby of the Florence, Co, Post Office.

• “Sugarloaf Mountain(1940). The mountain’s peak is featured in this mural, which hangs in a police station that once housed the Rockville, MD, Post Office.

•  Air Mail (1941). This mural depicts a letter carrier helping pilots load mailbags onto a plane. The mural is displayed at the Piggott, AR, Post Office, which will host the stamps’ April 10 dedication ceremony.

Each mural is featured twice on the stamp pane, which was designed by Antonio Alcalá, a USPS art director.

The stamps will be available at Post Offices across the nation and usps.com.
