This stamp honors Colorado’s 150th anniversary
The Centennial State joined the union in 1876
The Postal Service will release the Colorado Statehood stamp on Saturday, Jan. 24, to commemorate the state’s 150th anniversary.
Colorado became the 38th state on Aug. 1, 1876, and is nicknamed the Centennial State for joining the United States 100 years after it declared independence from Great Britain. The state is known for its landscapes and the Rocky Mountains.
The name Colorado comes from “colored red” or “ruddy,” which is how Spanish explorers described the silt of the Colorado River. Its average elevation is approximately 6,800 feet, the highest of all states.
Colorado has ski areas and resorts, as well as more than 39,000 miles of hiking trails, many state parks and four national parks.
There are numerous archaeological sites throughout the state, including stone villages called cliff dwellings built by Ancestral Puebloans in the southwestern part of the state. Other Native American tribes — including the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Pawnee, Shoshone and Lakota — have and continue to call Colorado home.
The Colorado Statehood stamp features a photograph of Jagged Mountain, located in the Weminuche Wilderness area of the San Juan National Forest, by nature photographer John Fielder (1950-2023).
Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the Forever stamp, which will be available at Post Offices and usps.com.

Singing their praises
Two employees thanked in song and Tennessee tackles winter weather
A Business Mail Entry Unit customer in Cincinnati name-checked two of its employees in a song to thank them for their help.
The tune, “Brave Like Me,” takes its name from the Brave Like Me Foundation, a nonprofit that customer John Otten co-founded after his son, Brayden, died from congenital heart disease. The nonprofit seeks to help children facing complex medical conditions.
Bulk Mail Technicians Rhonda Jackson and Melissa Vandegraft helped the foundation send out its first mailing, a process Vandegraft described as “awesome.”
“I loved seeing their dreams come to fruition and being part of that process,” she said.
Jackson, who helps customers use the Postal Service’s mailing software, said that patience is one of her virtues. “I am very patient with people, and I think that’s why he was so touched.”
Even so, she was surprised to learn about the song. “We made their day enough that they actually wrote a song about us. I think that’s awesome and that’s why I do what I do.”
Cozying up to safety
Field Safety and Health Manager Krista Hall and her team recently sponsored a Winter Weather Preparedness Contest in Tennessee.
The goal was to inspire retail and delivery employees to create welcoming, well-stocked winter safety stations that colleagues could use to tackle seasonal challenges. Ice scrapers, deicer pellets, hats, gloves and hot cocoa were some of the items on offer among the entries.
The top three winners — Maryville, Shelbyville and Mount Juliet stations — received prizes and bragging rights, but Hall expressed appreciation for all the stations that participated and showed a commitment to readiness.
“You have set the bar high for winter safety excellence,” she said.
