Cat in a tin hat
A rural carrier aided a feline in distress
Rural Carrier Matt Tripp was delivering mail in Morganfield, KY, recently when he came upon a cat with her head stuck in a tin can.
Tripp was unable to safely remove the can, so he called animal control and stayed with the cat until officers arrived.
She was taken to a shelter, where the can was safely removed.
Shelter employees determined that her head had been stuck in the can for almost 24 hours. She was treated for dehydration.
The cat, whose name is Jasper, was reunited with her owners.
“I suspect the cat would not have lived had Matt not called for help,” said Postmaster Kimberly Wolfe.
Employees featured in “Heroes” receive letters of commendation through the Postmaster General Heroes’ Program. The nomination form is available on Blue.

A White House award and two stamp ceremonies made news
Last week, Link covered a White House ceremony where the Postal Service received a Presidential Federal Sustainability Award.
The award honors USPS for its efforts to electrify its vehicle fleet, the largest in the federal government.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said the organization has “built a great relationship” with the White House Council on Environmental Quality and Office of Clean Energy and Innovation and Implementation.
“Our work together demonstrates electrification and sustainability efforts can coexist — not conflict — with cost savings, efficiency gains and operational transformation priorities,” he said.
We also told you about two Postal Service executives who will retire soon: Eric Henry, who will step down as Central Area vice president on Sunday, June 30, and Jacqueline “Jakki” Krage Strako, who will conclude her career as chief commerce and business solutions officer on Friday, July 12.

Additionally, we introduced you to “Heroes” such as Debra Mericle, a Paulding, OH, rural carrier who aided a customer stranded outdoors after breaking her leg, and we went “Off the Clock” with Statesboro, GA, Postmaster Angel Castro, who is a volunteer firefighter in his community.
“You must have the heart for this kind of work: When everybody is running out of a house on fire, we’re running in,” Castro said.
National University offers discounts for USPS employees
National University is offering Postal Service employees a 20 percent tuition reduction on most associate degrees, and bachelor’s, master’s and credential programs.
Employees are also eligible for a 15 percent tuition reduction on most doctoral programs.
National University, based in San Diego, offers a variety of online degrees and programs.
