New book from the Smithsonian tells the story of mail in early America

A recently published volume from Smithsonian Books traces the evolution of mail delivery in a nascent America.

“Routes to a Nation: The Post Office in the Colonies and Early United States” by Alison Bazylinski, Lynn Heidelbaugh and Daniel Piazza follows the growth of the Post Office alongside the nation through the early 19th century.

The book includes 130 photographs of letters, covers, seals, newspapers and other artifacts from the National Postal Museum’s collections.

“Routes to a Nation” retails for $45 and is available wherever books are sold. Postal Service employees may borrow a copy of the book from the USPS Corporate Library.
