The Postal Service will release its latest Hanukkah stamp on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
It features a colorful dreidel and is the ninth design in the series.
Hanukkah is an eight-night Jewish holiday observed by millions in the United States and worldwide. The holiday commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. and the miracle of oil that burned for eight days.
Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah includes games, music and special foods.
A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top traditionally used in holiday games. The name comes from a Yiddish word meaning “to turn.” The sides display the Hebrew letters: nun, gimel, heh and shin — short for “Nes gadol haya sham” which translates to “A great miracle happened there.” In Israel, shin is replaced with peh, meaning “here.”
The stamp art features a digital illustration of a dark blue dreidel with rust-colored Hebrew letters on a turquoise background, framed by floral elements.
Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp with original art by Lisa Perrin.
This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, Dec. 4, and concludes at sundown on Saturday, Dec. 12.
A dedication ceremony will be held at the Touro Synagogue in New Orleans.
The Forever stamp will be available in panes of 20 at Post Offices and on usps.com.
