Need to use a ladder or a lift? Be safe

Stay stable, don’t reach too far and ask for help

Employees should always keep three points of contact with a ladder while using it.

The Postal Service is reminding employees to follow safety protocols when they are using a ladder or a lift.

Recently, a maintenance employee saw an errant strap tangled on an elevated tray line. She climbed a ladder and attempted to free the strap but lost her balance, fell and suffered a head injury.

Remember to follow these measures when using ladders and lifts:

• Maintain three points of contact: Always keep two hands and one foot — or two feet and one hand — on a ladder or lift.

• Stay within your reach: Always maintain a stable position and avoid overextension.

• Request assistance: Ask for assistance from a co-worker or supervisor before starting an elevated task.
