Letter Carrier Brian Timm was delivering mail in South River, NJ, recently when the porch of a home he had just visited caught his eye.
A large bowl on the customer’s porch was on fire.
After 911 was called, Timm ran back to the residence and safely extinguished the blaze.
The customer, who was not home, later learned that the sun’s rays had ignited a piece of cardboard in the bowl.
She wrote to the town’s mayor to commend Timm, calling him “a true hero,” and also sent the Postal Service employee a card to thank him for his “quick thinking and act of bravery and kindness.”
Employees featured in “Heroes” receive letters of commendation through the Postmaster General Heroes’ Program. The nomination form is available on Blue.
