Visitors to last month’s California State Fair enjoyed carnival rides, livestock competitions, food contests — and writing letters.
The Post Office at the Cal Expo fairgrounds in Sacramento featured a letter-writing station and mailing materials for children.
The Heart of Northern California Postal Customer Council joined USPS to provide stamps and stationery with helpful templates to almost 100 children who visited the Post Office.
Costumed character Owney, named after the real dog who was the 19th-century Railway Mail mascot, helped with letters and offered tips about dog bite safety.
The young writers could drop their letters into the blue collection box to be mailed from the fair with a special pictorial postmark.
“Most of the letters were sent to grandma or grandpa,” said Gina Segura, a USPS customer relations coordinator.
The Postal Service has maintained a Post Office at the California State Fair since 1987. This location brings in around $50,000 in revenue during the two-week event.
The Post Office ships items sold by exhibitors and sells state fair postcards along with USPS-licensed products, toys and mail carrier costumes for children.
