More than two dozen cowboys recently participated in Arizona’s Hashknife Pony Express, an annual celebration of the Old West’s famed letter carriers.
The Holbrook Postmaster swears in the riders, who carry more than 20,000 pieces of First-Class Mail on a 200-mile route between Holbrook and Scottsdale.
Winslow, AZ, Letter Carrier Walter Pacheco donned cowboy duds and saddled up with the posse. He carried a postal flag at the end of the run.
The event began 57 years ago when the Navajo County sheriff began using Pony Express riders to deliver invitations to Holbrook’s annual Hashknife Stampede to the governor.
The riders later got a contract with the Postal Service to deliver mail for the annual run.
