USPS to deliver 15.5 billion holiday mailpieces

Holiday preview
USPS expects to deliver 600 million packages this holiday season, up 10.5 percent from last year.

The Postal Service expects to deliver 15.5 billion cards, letters and packages this holiday season, according to projections released Nov. 5.

Approximately 600 million package deliveries are expected between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, up 10.5 percent from last year’s record-setting performance.

“Customers can count on the Postal Service and our more than 600,000 dedicated employees,” said PMG Megan Brennan.

Like last year, USPS will deliver packages on Sundays in major cities and high-volume areas. Sunday deliveries will begin Nov. 29 and continue until Christmas.

The busiest mailing and shipping day is expected Monday, Dec. 14, while the busiest delivery day is expected Monday, Dec. 21.

To meet customers’ needs, the Postal Service plans to hire an additional 30,000 employees for the holiday season.

USPS also has been investing in infrastructure — including package-sorting equipment and new delivery vehicles — to help manage higher parcel volumes.

Additionally, the Postal Service has invested in new technology: This year, My USPS.com customers can sign up for real-time delivery notifications that alert them within a few minutes of the delivery scan for select packages.

To promote its offerings, the Postal Service began its holiday advertising campaign this week.
