Letter Carrier David Schickler was delivering mail one afternoon last spring in a Brockport, NY, neighborhood when a crisis interrupted his routine:
He spotted a fire at the rear of an apartment house on Main Street.
Schickler immediately called 911 and safely entered the building to knock on doors and make residents aware of the emergency.
Firefighters soon arrived to battle the blaze.
“Dave helped save lives that day, and he also saved the building by calling 911 so quickly,” said Brockport Postmaster Mary Dachille.
