Letter Carrier Daniel Colon was delivering mail in Damascus, MD, on a weekday in May when he spotted a vehicle on fire in customer Kani Bassey’s driveway.
With flames spreading to the garage, Colon rushed to the front door and rang the Wi-Fi video doorbell as he heard dogs barking inside the home.
After connecting to Bassey — who had left 15 minutes earlier in another vehicle — via her smartphone, he alerted her to the crisis, then called 911.
Firefighters soon arrived to battle the blaze and rescue Bassey’s two dogs and a ferret.
The home sustained significant damage, displacing Bassey, her four children and their pets during months of repairs.
When frustration flares up, though, Bassey said she focuses on Colon’s goodwill.
“Thank you, that’s what I would like to say,” she told local ABC station WJLA. “Thank you so much for saving the rest of our house, and the pets, and just being there when he was.”
