Postal Service employees helped ensure domestic tranquility for customers experiencing crises at home in 2018.
Several Postmaster General Heroes’ Program honorees responded to serious household accidents, including Price, UT, Letter Carrier Trent Hanna; Palmyra, IN, Rural Carrier Associate Felicia Camm; and Merrick, NY, City Carrier Assistant Mark Wiesner.
Hanson, MA, Rural Carrier Associate Carrie McDermott guided a woman with Alzheimer’s to safety during a house fire.
Spokane, WA, Letter Carrier Todd Eklund got a customer and her dogs out of harm’s way during a brush fire.
In Clearfield, UT, Rural Carrier Associate Tait Francis spotted a residential blaze and made sure a woman and her two teenage sons escaped.
Employees who detected gas leaks, such as Torrington, CT, Letter Carrier Timothy Thibault, also made a difference for grateful customers.
Customers who faced medical emergencies at home were assisted by employees such as Johnstown, NY, Letter Carrier Nicole Hunt; Amarillo, TX, Letter Carrier Becky Adams; and Sandy, UT, Letter Carrier Heidi Wiederspahn.
“I felt something was wrong, and doing nothing is just not in my nature,” said Wiederspahn, who checked on a customer whose mail was piling up and discovered that the woman was badly hurt in a fall. “You do good for people. That’s the way I was taught.”
