Postal Service employees who served in the armed forces were honored at recent Veterans Day-themed events across the nation.
Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan spoke at a ceremony at USPS headquarters in Washington, DC, where she praised the more than 100,000 veterans who are part of the organization’s workforce.
“Everyone at the Postal Service is proud to count you among our colleagues,” Brennan said.
To mark Veterans Day this year, USPS provided employees who served in the military with special badges and lanyards. Many employees received these items at local events that featured remarks from area vice presidents, district managers and others.
Some employees received local honors.
For example, Christopher Dils, a maintenance mechanic at the Buffalo, NY, Processing and Distribution Center, received an annual award named for Frank Cius, a postal employee who was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.
During his acceptance speech, Dils, who was in the Marine Corps from 1987-1991, recalled working with Cius and sharing their military experiences.
“I told Frank, ‘Thank you for your service.’ He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘And thank you for yours,’” Dils recalled. “I walked away with tears in my eyes that a man who endured so much, and was so humble, would thank me.”
