Winter is coming

Bird stamps arrive Sept. 22

Four stamps, each showing a colorful bird
The Birds in Winter stamps feature, from left, a blue jay, a red-bellied woodpecker, a black-capped chickadee and a northern cardinal.

The Postal Service will issue Birds in Winter, stamps that showcase four winged beauties in seasonal scenes, Saturday, Sept. 22.

The stamps feature a black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus), a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) and a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus).

Each bird is depicted in a bold digital rendering. The feeling of winter, evoked by stark white backgrounds, is enlivened by the colors of the birds’ plumage in the artwork’s simplified shapes.

The Birds in Winter stamps will be available in booklets of 20 at Post Offices and usps.com.
