Letter Carrier Jonathan Griffith was recently delivering mail in Beebe, AR, when he spotted smoke billowing from the rear of a house.
As he drove by, he could see a woman looking out a window. He motioned for her to leave, but she remained in place.
“She looked confused and desperate,” Griffith later told a local newspaper. “I decided I had to do something.”
The Postal Service employee stopped and approached the burning home, urging the woman to immediately evacuate.
She then broke the window and escaped.
“The family credits Jonathan with possibly saving her life,” said Beebe Postmaster Sibylle Alwin Carter.
A dog in the residence — which sustained extensive damage — reached safety, too, with the help of a firefighter who was soon on the scene.
