Online defense. Identity theft is an invasive, disruptive and costly cybercrime. To protect your personal data, USA.gov — the official guide to government information and services — recommends the following online security precautions:

  • Provide your Social Security number to reputable sources only when absolutely necessary
  • Never respond to unsolicited requests for your name, birthdate, bank account or other personal information
  • Protect mobile devices by enabling security features
  • Create complex passwords
  • Change passwords when your account with a company has been breached

If you suspect you’ve been a victim of identity theft, contact the Federal Trade Commission online or call 877-438-4338.

The CyberSafe at USPS BlueLiteBlue and USPSCyberSafe.com sites have more information.
