Postal Service employees in Wisconsin, Hawaii and California recently took decisive action in emergencies.
Letter Carrier Tammie Halverson was delivering mail in Viroqua, WI, when she saw a man fall to the sidewalk from a second-floor apartment. She rushed back to her vehicle to retrieve her phone and call 911, then returned to the scene until emergency responders arrived. The man, who is recovering from hip, leg and arm fractures, thanked Halverson for helping him.
After an electrical fire broke out at the Sand Island Carrier Annex in Honolulu, Carrier Technician Saifoloi Faaituala used an extinguisher to put out the flames, preventing injuries and extensive damage. Firefighters on the scene commended him for his response.
Joseph Sanchez, a tractor-trailer operator at the Anaheim, CA, Processing and Distribution Center, came to the aid of a freeway accident victim whose car had flipped over. He and another passerby pulled the panicked woman to safety away from her smoking vehicle. Sanchez then moved his vehicle to ensure that emergency personnel could access the scene.
“Joe was the first responder to help a stranger. His character would not allow him to drive past and not help someone in need,” Plant Manager Dennis Moulds said.
