Postal Service employees are asked to take precautions against ransomware in the wake of the WannaCry cyberattacks affecting more than 200,000 systems worldwide since May 12.
“Postal Service networks and operations are not impacted to date by this attack,” said Chief Information Officer Kristin Seaver. “However, the Postal Service is asking all employees to be hyper-vigilant and cautious for suspicious emails and when you are online.”
Laptop users coming back on the USPS network after the weekend and employees with desktop computers that have not been rebooted since last week are also asked to take precautions.
Instructions were sent to all employees with ACE IDs, including a caution to watch for suspicious pop-up messages, and to immediately call the IT Help Desk at 1-800-USPSHELP (877-7435) if you observe the terms “ransomware” or “bitcoin” in any pop-up screens.
Employees are asked to report suspicious emails to the CyberSecurity Operations Center at cybersafe@usps.gov.
