Luminaries from the worlds of business, politics and media saluted Oscar de la Renta at the Feb. 16 dedication of the stamps honoring him.
De la Renta (1932-2014) was one of the world’s leading fashion designers for more than 50 years. He is most widely known for dressing celebrities and the nation’s first ladies.
The new pane features 11 stamps: a black-and-white portrait of de la Renta and 10 stamps that highlight some of his most exquisite gowns.
“These beautiful stamps illustrate his highly polished style and tremendous skill, which helped bridge the gap between American and French designers of trend-setting fashions for women,” said Corporate Communications VP Janice Walker, who dedicated the stamps at the New York City ceremony.
Other speakers included Hillary Clinton; Michael Bloomberg, business leader, philanthropist and formerly New York City’s mayor; Anna Wintour, artistic director of Condé Nast and Vogue’s editor in chief; CNN’s Anderson Cooper; and Alexander Bolen, chief executive officer of de la Renta’s company.
“Oscar was proud to be an American and this would have made him tremendously happy. To commemorate his personal version of the American dream with these stamps is a great honor,” Bolen said.
