Letter Carrier Robert Mahaffey delivered a double dose of heroism during a recent workday in Vandalia, IL.
He first heard a man call for help from the hot roof where he’d been stranded for an hour after accidentally knocking over a ladder.
Mahaffey helped him get to safety.
Later, just a block away, the postal employee detected a strong smell of natural gas.
He flagged down a utility worker, which led to a large emergency response to ensure that any damage to the gas main was located before there was an explosion.
