Anchorage, AK, Letter Carrier Kermit Arroyo was delivering mail earlier this year when he saw flames shooting from a home’s garage.
Arroyo banged on the front door until homeowner Chris Erpelding, who had been asleep, answered.
“Thank God he showed up, because I don’t know if I would’ve made it out had he not,” Erpelding told TV station KTUU.
Arroyo called 911 while a neighbor lent Erpelding a coat and took in his cat. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the garage.
“Kermit is a true hero. His actions saved a customer’s life,” said Alaska District Manager Ron Haberman.
Arroyo dismissed the suggestion he’s heroic.
“I just reacted. It was all in a day’s work,” he said.
