Last week, Link showed how Dolly Parton’s legacy lives on in Imagination Library, the literacy program she began in 1995 that has sent well over 100 million books to children ages 1-5.
“Having a reliable and affordable mail service makes what we do possible. Last year, we mailed about 40 million books through USPS,” said Samuel Wolfe, who oversees Imagination Library’s U.S. and global mailing partnerships.
It was a busy week for philatelists. The Postal Service released a set of stamps honoring photographer, musician and activist Linda McCartney; as well as the 11th stamp in the Kwanzaa series and Squirrels & Chipmunks in Snow.
We also told you about Kim Novak, a rural carrier in Arkansas who helped rescue a dog and her puppies; about a “roadeo” for drivers of USPS big rigs; and alerted readers to the window for USPS summer internship applications opening Sept. 28.
And we reminded readers the importance of creating an emergency supply kit and about the prohibition on commercial selling and advertising on Postal Service property.
“Heroes” told the story of Ethan Jones, a rural carrier who averted disaster after an SUV crashed into an apartment complex in Louisville, KY.
Jones helped the driver out of the vehicle, then returned to the complex and went from apartment to apartment to alert residents after the crash ignited a fire. All made it safely out.
And finally, there was sad news to report in “People”: Tim Norman, a strategic communications specialist in Central Area who worked for USPS for more than 40 years, died Aug. 31.
“Tim was kind, compassionate and a dear friend. Words cannot describe the pain we feel or how much he will be missed,” said Mark Inglett, Central Area’s strategic communications manager.
