Employees at the Dallas Network Distribution Center recently were able to free up 8,000 square feet of space through a tidying up project.
The effort also resulted in around $8,000 in extra money for the Postal Service.
The project began with employees identifying excess equipment and items that were no longer of use.
Contract Technician Taluan Henderson sent photos of the surplus items to Ruben Chapa, an inventory control specialist at the Dallas Asset Accountability Service Center.
Chapa contacted other USPS facilities to determine if any of them wanted the equipment. Anything not claimed was put up for auction on GovDeals.com, an online marketplace that government agencies can use to sell surplus items.
Industrial conveyors, wood pallets and a nonworking forklift were among the facility’s items that were sold on the site.
Henderson said that removing excess items resulted in a more organized environment, created additional storage space and reduced safety hazards.
“I would encourage any facility with excess or unused equipment to take advantage of this process,” she said.
