Employees must adhere to the Postal Service’s “zero discharge” policy to prevent oil, grease and other pollutants from entering stormwater systems and outdoor drains when washing vehicles.

The Postal Service is reminding employees and contractors to take precautions to prevent hazardous chemicals from entering waterways or the environment when washing vehicles outdoors.

The organization’s “zero discharge” policy prohibits the release of oil, grease, metals, acids and other pollutants into outdoor drains and stormwater systems.

Keep these rules in mind when washing vehicles outdoors:

• Use a dry wash or high-vapor steam technique that does not generate wastewater or, if using a wet wash, ensure that the wastewater is collected, contained or vacuumed into a tank or other container and transported off site for proper management.

• When washing vehicles in the rain, use a covered area that does not produce runoff.

• Never release or discharge wastewater or pollutants into stormwater systems.

More information on the policy can be found in the environmental compliance bulletin on vehicle washing requirements on Blue.
