Letter Carrier Danita Brooks-Poindexter was delivering mail in Watertown, MA, when she spotted smoke and flames at a house.
As a bystander called 911, Brooks-Poindexter rushed toward the burning home and knocked on a door. She ensured that the six residents safely evacuated, then she informed neighbors of the blaze.
The multi-alarm fire had started on the ground floor and quickly spread to the attic.
“They’re senior citizens, and I just wanted to make sure they’re out of the house because the door was closed and their car was home,” Brooks-Poindexter told WCVB Boston.
Other local TV stations covered her efforts and captured aerial footage of the flames. Firefighters praised the postal employee’s quick response.
