Healing the world

CFC spotlights global health

The Combined Federal Campaign includes many charities that address international health matters.

The Combined Federal Campaign’s cause of the week is global health.

There’s good news and bad news on the worldwide health front, according to the World Health Organization:

• Global life expectancy at birth jumped from 66.8 years in 2000 to 73.3 years in 2019, but

• Burgeoning “lifestyle” diseases such as obesity and diabetes are affecting those extra years in a negative way.

The myriad diseases that spring from impoverished conditions — such as malaria, leishmaniasis and dengue fever — mean global health nonprofits can always use a shot-in-the-arm donation.

If you are unsure of where to focus your giving in this category, the website for the campaign, also known as the CFC, makes it easy:

• Under “CFC Giving System” on the homepage, choose the “Online Charity Search” link.

• You will be brought to “Find a Charity.” While there is no specific category for global health, there are many that touch on it.

• A few to try include “Health Care,” “Public Safety, Disaster Preparedness and Relief” and “Voluntary Health Associations and Medical Disciplines.”

The Combined Federal Campaign is the federal government’s workplace charity drive. The latest campaign began Sept. 1 and runs through Jan. 14.

Participation in the CFC is voluntary.

This is the second in a series of articles spotlighting the Combined Federal Campaign’s cause of the week. Next week: housing and shelter.
