Letter Carrier Peter Sigona was recently delivering mail in an Auburn, NY, neighborhood when an older customer flagged him down.
Sigona stopped to check on the woman, who is recovering from a stroke and relies on a walker.
She told him her phone had been out of order for several days, and she just realized the outage had rendered her medical alert device inoperable, too.
The distressed customer, who hadn’t spotted a passerby for an hour, asked the Postal Service employee to call her cousin, which he happily did.
Sigona soon stopped back by to let the woman know her cousin had contacted the phone company, which had dispatched a repair worker due to arrive later that day.
The customer subsequently mailed a letter to the local Post Office to express her gratitude for Sigona’s assistance.
