Employee’s tip brings in shipping deal

Joseph Kittles, a Merrifield, VA, mail handler, recently helped generate new revenue for USPS.

A sales lead from a mail handler in Virginia has resulted in a big shipping deal for the Postal Service.

Joseph Kittles, who works at the Northern Virginia Processing and Distribution Center in Merrifield, routinely accepts packages dropped off by business customers.

After speaking with one of those customers about their shipping needs, Kittles submitted a lead through the Mail Handlers program, which allows mail handlers to submit information about businesses they think could benefit from USPS products and services.

The program is supported by the National Postal Mail Handlers Union.

USPS Sales team members followed up with the customer and closed a shipping deal worth $383,750 in new estimated annualized revenue for the Postal Service.

Sales generated from Mail Handlers program leads are included in the USPS Every Lead Counts campaign to raise revenue through sales leads from employees.

“Joseph has an ability to listen to customers and recognize that they may need some assistance understanding their options,” said Dorothy Muir, a small-business specialist at USPS headquarters in Washington, DC. “His care for his customer resulted in a win for both the customers and USPS.”

The Postal Service is encouraging as many employees as possible to submit at least one lead through any of its six lead programs by Sept. 30.
