October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, when the spotlight turns to disability employment issues and to the contributions of workers nationwide with disabilities.
“America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion” is the timely theme for this year.
“The Postal Service is proud to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Deputy Postmaster General and Chief Human Resources Officer Doug Tulino. “Our workforce includes many employees with disabilities, and we thank them for their contributions to USPS and our public service mission.”
National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces its roots to 1945, when Congress set aside the first week in October for disability employment awareness. Congress extended the observance to a month in 1988.
The Postal Service’s National Disability Program and Reasonable Accommodation Blue pages have information on disability employment awareness and reasonable accommodation resources, including stand-up talks, policy and procedure links, American Sign Language instructional videos and a National Disability Employment Awareness Month resource kit.
The U.S. Labor Department website also has helpful information, including resources for employers on hiring and retaining workers with disabilities, advances in accessible technology, and frequently asked questions about service animals.
