Letter Carrier Patrick Twohig was delivering mail one day last fall in a Staten Island, NY, neighborhood when a 9-year-old boy ran up to him.
The boy pleaded for help for his mother, who was unconscious in their residence.
Twohig immediately called 911, followed the boy to the woman’s side and performed CPR on her until emergency responders arrived and took her to a hospital.
She recovered from the incident.
A neighbor who observed the scene from afar later praised Twohig in a report for a local newspaper.
“Thank you, Pat, for being so decent, thank you for following a distressed little boy, and thank you for being my mailman,” the neighbor wrote.
Twohig was also among a group of heroic employees and others invited to represent the Postal Service during a ceremony to ring the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York City on Christmas Eve.
