Hamilton Award

USPS was recently honored for implementing a system to keep online retail credit card transactions secure.

Hamilton Award. The Postal Service has won a silver award in this year’s Alexander Hamilton Awards, which are given by Treasury & Risk Magazine to honor innovation in the corporate treasury, finance and risk management sectors.

USPS was recognized in the operation risk management and insurance category for implementing a system of “tokenizing” credit card numbers to keep retail transactions secure.

A recent article in the magazine described the Postal Service’s process for making the change, including forming a team with representatives from multiple departments, choosing a vendor and communicating the new process to the organization’s various business units.

“The payment processor is certified by the card brands, so we are confident in its data security,” Elizabeth Richardson, the Postal Service’s assistant treasurer for customer payments, told Treasury & Risk. “And we’ve reduced to zero the chances that a nefarious party will get access within our infrastructure to card data they can use.”
