The following message from Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan was distributed to USPS employees Oct. 16, following her retirement announcement:
Today I am announcing my retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, effective Jan. 31, 2020.
When I was appointed Postmaster General, I made a commitment to the Board of Governors that I would serve for five years and it has been my absolute honor to do so. I feel a deep responsibility to this organization and to its future. The advance notice of my retirement will allow the board adequate time to conduct an executive search, select the next Postmaster General and ensure a seamless transition.
I have confidence in the future of the Postal Service. We play a vital and indispensable role in the United States economy and to every American home, business and community. Our governors are committed to strengthening the organization and their judgment and stewardship will help the Postal Service find a financially sustainable path.
We can take pride in our collective achievements: investing in the future and positioning the organization for success, speeding the pace of innovation, better engaging and empowering our workforce, and driving efficiency throughout our enterprise. Despite the constraints on our business, we have shaped a brighter future for the Postal Service, while remaining a responsible employer, and always putting the customer at the center of our strategies.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to the men and women of the U.S. Postal Service with whom I have had the privilege to work over the course of my 33-year career. You embody the spirit of public service, you earn the trust of the American people every day, and you continually reinforce my reverence for this institution and my abiding belief in our mission.
You have my commitment that during the remaining months of my tenure, I will remain focused on those strategies that we can effect to better serve our customers and to make the Postal Service financially stable. Know that I will play through the whistle.
Thank you for keeping your focus on serving our customers, the American public, both now and into the future.
