The winter months can seem drab, but if you look closely you may find some of the most beautiful plant growth of any season.
This is the message speaker after speaker delivered during last week’s dedication ceremony for the Winter Berries stamps.
“Although much of nature’s bold imagery gets muted by winter’s cold temperatures and snowfall … the four colorful berries that we are highlighting on our new stamps are sure to help brighten the season,” said Steven Phelps, the Postal Service’s acting pricing and costing vice president, one of the speakers at the ceremony.
The event was held at the Tulsa Botanic Garden in Oklahoma. Other speakers were Barbara Sturdivant, the Tulsa Botanic Garden Board of Directors’ chair, and Todd Lasseigne, the Tulsa Botanic Garden’s president and chief executive officer, along with Raymond Red Corn, the Osage Nation’s assistant principal chief.
The stamps feature highly detailed botanical portraits of winterberry (Ilex verticillata), juniper berry (Juniperus communis), beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) and soapberry (Sapindus saponaria) plants.
The stamps are available in booklets of 20 at Post Offices and usps.com.
Said Lasseigne: “It’s great to be able to celebrate these plants that add color and value to our lives.”
