Webb City, MO, City Carrier Assistant Tammy Chairez had gotten in the habit of checking on an older customer in poor health who wasn’t getting around well.
One day recently, as Chairez was delivering mail and making her way to the customer’s porch, she heard the woman inside yelling for help.
The Postal Service employee found the customer lying on the floor, called 911 and stayed with her until emergency responders arrived.
The grateful woman later contacted the local Post Office to say that she’d been stranded for two hours, without anyone else due to check on her for several hours more.
“I always try to look out for the elderly on the route, because sometimes mail carriers are the only people who come in contact with them all day,” Chairez said.
