Perfect man, perfect time

Rogers remembered in video

The beloved host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” is remembered as a media visionary in a new video from the Postal Service.

“Fred Rogers is the perfect man at the perfect time,” says documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville, one of several Rogers’ fans who appear in the video.

“He came along right at the time television came along, this new medium, and he saw from the first time he put his eyes on it that this was something that was going to change the world.”

“Fred Rogers Tribute,” the 5-minute video, also features interviews with Bill Isler, formerly president and chief executive officer of the Fred Rogers Co.; educator Mariruth Leftwich; and public broadcasting leaders Pat Harrison and Paula Kerger.

Other comments come from Rogers’ widow Joanne, who recalls his appreciation for mail, including the letters he received from children.

“His mail helped him a lot when he was trying to decide ‘What shall I do next?’” she says.

The video, which was shown at the recent Mister Rogers stamp dedication ceremony, is also available on the Postal Service’s YouTube channel.
