Johnston City, IL, City Carrier Assistant Travis Cooper was recently delivering mail when he spotted a house fire.
Cooper called 911 and located a garden hose, but seeing no spigot, he attempted to extinguish the flames with bottled water.
Neighbors soon emerged from their homes and told Cooper someone was likely inside the residence, so he banged on a door but got no response.
Cooper then found a bucket and faucet next door and continued to battle the blaze while neighbors focused on waking the occupant, who was sleeping.
Firefighters soon arrived and commended Cooper, who is also a military veteran, for his life-saving response.
He later learned that the occupant is related to two fellow Postal Service employees.
“I was just in the right place at the right time,” Cooper said.
